Basic Dining Etiquette
We all know the basic rules to eating etiquette like never chew with your mouth open, don’t talk with your mouth full, don’t cut all your food before you begin eating. However, there are many more rules you are maybe not aware of, and we are going to talk about them here.
First of all, you should always dress for the occasion and the place you are going to depending on how formal it is. Some of the rules may be more applicable for dining in high-class restaurants, however, you can use them any place and any time. You should keep your elbows off the table at all times, and keep your purse off from it as well. Using a napkin is another thing. You should not wipe your mouth with it, just gently dab it, and always place it on the side of your plate, never on it, once you are finished with the meal.
Make sure you are familiar with cutlery and the glasses before your meal begins. One simple rule to follow for the cutlery is to go from the outside and work your way in. When dining, another useful tip to remember is to never salt the food before tasting it, and don’t ask them to replace the ingredients from the meal unless you have an allergy. There are some of the rules that we have all broken in the past probably. Clinking your glasses when toasting is not what you should do, instead just raise your glass. It is also considered rude to use a toothpick at the table. Rather, excuse yourself and go to the bathroom. If any type of appetizer or snack is served on one plate for all of the guests, never take it directly to your mouth, but place it on your plate first. When dining, you also shouldn’t blow on your food, don’t treat the servers badly, never return something you don’t like, simply leave it. This all may sound like too much, however, it shows how polite, well-behaved you are, and what good manners you have.
You are probably not going to use this etiquette when you are having pizza night at your friend’s house, of course, but for any formal event it may come in handy.
